Belgium: Tillerson, Mogherini at odds over Iran deal in Brussels talks

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson spoke alongside European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini in a press conference following high level talks in Brussels over developments on the Middle East and North Korea fronts on Tuesday. The European Union's top diplomat called the implementation of the Iran nuclear programme a «key strategic priority for European security» urging the United... Еще States to stay in the agreement while noting that other issues with Tehran should be addressed otherwise. Tillerson in turn stressed that «Iran is carrying out a number of other destabilizing actions in the region» naming Tehran's support for Houthis in Yemen's war and exporting weapons to Syria among others, saying that US intends to «continue to take action» and «look forward to working with European partners as well». The meeting comes a few weeks after Moghreni's visit to Washington where she urged US lawmakers to stay in the Iranian-US JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) which was agreed under the Obama administration in 2015. Earlier US President Donald Trump made the decision to renege on the Iran agreement and it has now been referred to Congress for further deliberation. Another issue on the table was North Korea's missile programme, after Pyongyang tested a long-range missile that they claimed is capable of reaching the United States. The US top diplomat expressed his support for EU economic sanctions on Pyongyang in a bid to bring the regime to the negotiating table. He also called onto all NATO allies and partners in EU to increase their defence spending noting that it is towards «shared objective and serves everyone well.»
