Belgium: Sec. of State Pompeo commands Europe to step up NATO defence spending

New United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged his European partners to meet NATO defence spending targets, at a meeting in Brussels on Friday. On his first trip abroad, Pompeo said member states should «fulfil their obligations on defence spending, investing in capabilities essential to the long-term defence of their countries and address threats emanating from neighbouring regions... Еще». He also singled out Germany for criticism, saying they had not failed to increase their defence spending to agreed levels. Elsewhere in his speech, Pompeo emphasised the threat Russia poses NATO allies «both militarily [...] and through an aggressive campaign to undermine Western democratic institutions.» The secretary of state is in Brussels for talks with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and other European defence ministers.
