NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced that the mission in Iraq will be expanded, during a virtual press conference held from NATO headquarters in Brussels following a meeting of NATO defence ministers, on Friday.
Stoltenberg said, «NATO remains committed to stepping up our support, our aim is to build self-sustaining Iraqi forces able to fight terrorism, prevent the return of ISIS and stabilise their country.»
«Today ministers tasked our military commanders to expand our mission in Iraq. We will continue to consult with the global coalition and Iraqi authorities about the way ahead,» he added.
Stoltenberg also said that NATO has reduced its number of troops in Afghanistan to under 12,000. He said the Taliban must cut all ties with «Al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups» in order for the peace process to be accepted.
