Belgium: 'Lots of work and no time for gossip' — EC on May-Juncker Brexit dinner 'leaks'

Chief Spokesperson of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, broke with convention and commented on purported leaks at a press briefing in Brussels, Monday. He said that “some people” are seeking to undermine Brexit talks, following alleged leaks to a German newspaper that detailed the supposed reactions of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker following a dinner with UK Prime... Еще Minister Theresa May on October 16. May was described as being “despondent and discouraged” according to the report, which attributed the comments to Juncker. She was also said to have pleaded for the EU's help. Schinas told the audience, “some people like to point at us to serve their own political agendas, their own political priorities or even to undermine our negotiating positions. We would appreciate if these people would leave us alone.” The Commission spokesperson went on to add, “we have lots of work and no time for gossip. I have to be very clear, that President Juncker would never have used the words attributed to him and never would he have said anything like this. We have never been punitive on Brexit, we have said at all levels, on many occasions that we are working for a fair deal.”
