Former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont launched his bid for re-election from Oostkamp in Belgium on Sunday. Speaking to party faithful at the rally, Puigdemont called on the electorate to “ratify” the unilateral declaration of independence of November 3. He posed the following question to the Spanish government. “If [Article] 155 is defeated, if Mr Rajoy is defeated, if the tripartite of... Еще [Article] 155 lose this elections, will they compromise that night to override [Article] 155?” The Catalonia regional elections will take place on December 21. The Junts per Catalunya coalition is formed of Puigdemont’s Catalan European Democratic (PDeCAT) party and other independent candidates. Both the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) and the Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) have rejected a new Junts pel Sí coalition. Puigdemont faces arrest if he returns to Spain. He is currently awaiting extradition from Belgium after fleeing Spain amid a crackdown by Spanish authorities.
