Belgium: EU will fund Syria reconstruction only if political process in place — Mogherini

The EU won't provide money to aid Syria reconstruction unless there is a political process underway, EU High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said at the EU-UN Syria conference in Brussels, Wednesday. Mogherini explained why the EU is pushing for a political process, rather than a military one to end the conflict in Syria: «Military victory... Еще could come. And we see some actors pursuing that kind of strategy, but what next? What happens the month after that? Two months after that? One year after that?» She also reiterated her support for the Iran nuclear pact and spoke about Macron's recent comments on the deal, saying: «President Macron underlined once again that all of Europe is completely behind the complete implementation of the [Iran] deal and that on the table there is the question of some additional [clauses], without touching a deal that exists.» During the press conference, UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura commented on last week's tensions at the UN over Syria: «One week ago we were on the brink of a very serious crisis. It was the closest to what one could say was a very tense Cold War rhetoric and even military activity. Thank god it was avoided, thanks to mature thinking and mature decision.»
