Representatives of the EU and Mercosur heralded a new trade agreement between the two blocs at a press conference in Brussels on Friday.
«The European Union and our four friends from Mercosur — Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay — have just reached an agreement. This is a historical moment,» said Cecilia Malmstrom, EU Trade Commissioner in charge of EU trade policy.
The agreement, which... Еще took more than 20 years to negotiate, will link up markets in South America and Europe.
«The agreement reached today will create a free trade area covering 760 million peoples, bringing two continents closer together in spirit of openness and cooperation,» said Malmstrom.
Argentina's Foreign Affairs Minister Jorge Faurie himself also touted the «historical» nature of the deal. «I think that our leaders which are — and all the leaders that are now in Osaka — when they go to the table tomorrow or today, early in the morning for them they will realise that there are two groups of countries very capable, first of all of bridging the differences, getting across of what we need and try to work together for the benefit of people from both sides,» he said.
