The Azeri armed forces alongside government officials including Foreign Policy Advisor Hikmet Hajiyev and journalists entered the Fuzuli region of southwestern Azerbaijan on Wednesday after the area was recaptured from the Armenian armed forces last month.
«White phosphorus ammunitions are extremely dangerous, they can cause a fire and contaminate civil populations,» Hajiyev told reporters as he alleged that the Armenian side used them while fighting. He added that his government «has been authorised to raise this issue at the United Nations.»
Following weeks of hostilities, Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a Russian-brokered deal to end fighting over the Nagorno-Karabakh region on November 9.
The agreement sees Azerbaijan obtaining control of the territory it has taken in the most recent fighting, with Armenia expected to give up more territories in the coming days.
