Thousands of protesters descended upon the centre of Vienna, on Friday night, to show their opposition to the annual ball of Austria's far-right fraternities. The ball is funded by the right-wing Free Austrian Party (FPO). In a bid to prevent tensions that had occurred in previous years, the police minimised the points where protesters could encounter attendees of the ball by carving out a large... Еще perimetre around the 'Hofburg', where the ball was being held. In response to previous protests against the annual event, the Viennese police circulated a warning prior to this year's demonstration, stating that protesters would not be permitted to obscure their faces or use firecrackers and smoke-bombs. The FPO has held its 'Viennese Academics Ball' annually since 2013. It has attracted huge protests each year. The Academics Ball is the successor of the Viennese Corporations Ball, which was held from 1952 to 2012.
