Austria: Ryanair's Laudamotion to abandon Vienna base after union dispute

Laudamotion, a Ryanair subsidiary budget carrier hitherto based in Vienna, will relocate from the Austrian capital and cut 300 jobs after the union representing its workers refused to accept pay cuts for the airline's employees, Friday. The airline reportedly wished to cut starting wages by more than 20 percent to 848 Euro net ($924), which the Vida trade union claimed was below the poverty... Еще threshold in Austria. «Ryanair blackmailed the Austrian social partners, the chamber of economics and the trade unions, with creating salaries below the poverty line, creating working-poor conditions, and this is unacceptable for a trade union in Austria. And social partners in Austria decided to stop this blackmailing, well-known game by Ryanair across Europe,» said Daniel Liebhart, a Vida union representative. Ilana, a groundworker at the airport, also commented on the news, «850 or 900 Euro...that is very little. I work here in Austria at the airport (on the ground) and earn three times more money for my work.» The carrier is due to close its Vienna operations on May 29, and will continue at its bases in Germany and Spain.
