Russian corporation Gazprom Export and Austria energy company OMV Gas Marketing & Trading GmbH signed an agreement on gas supplies until 2040 on Tuesday, following talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurtz in Vienna. The agreement was signed by Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee Alexei Miller and Chairman of the Board of the Austrian concern... Еще Rainer Seele, in the presence of Putin and Kurtz. During a press conference, the two leaders touched upon a number of issues of international concern. Kurz stated, «we hope that through an intensive dialogue, a progress will be reached in the relations between the European Union and Russia. We especially hope that there will be progress in eastern Ukraine, so that sanctions can be removed step by step in accordance with the Minsk agreement.» Putin explained that he had informed Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurtz about his vision for settling the situation in the Donbass and that from their talks, it is clear that Russia and Austria are in favour of «full and rigorous compliance by all parties to the conflict with Minsk agreements.» The head of Russia also touched upon the situation in Syria stating, «if Europe wants the flow of migrants, including from the region of Syria, from neighboring countries, to decrease, it is necessary to help people to return to their homes, we need to help them to build a life in their own country.» In addition, Russia and Austria signed documents including a protocol on amending the Russian-Austrian convention on avoiding double taxation, as well as a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Economic Development and the Federal Ministry of Transport and Innovation and Technology of Austria on cooperation in innovation. The officials also signed a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Federal Ministry for Sustainable Development and Tourism of the Republic of Austria. On Monday, June 4, Russia and Austria celebrated the 50th anniversary of the beginning of gas supplies between the countries. In 1968, the contract was signed by the Soviet company Soyuznefteexport and the Austrian OMV. Austria became the first country in Western Europe to sign a gas contract with the USSR.
