Austria: Kurz's supporters in high spirits as general election results put OVP in the lead

A gathering of supporters of the Austrian People's Party (OVP) in Vienna turned into a celebration as results came in showing the party's lead in the country's general elections, Sunday. Incoming results show OVP candidate Sebastian Kurz was advancing to become Europe's youngest leader at 31, potentially in coalition with the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPO). Amid the applause of the... Еще attendees, OVP General Secretary Elisabeth Koestringer stressed on how the OVP had been «mocked» in the last months, before proceeding to recognize the successful result «with a lot of humility,» calling it an «assignment to move something in this country.» Projections on state television indicate that Kurz's OVP won 30.5 percent of the vote, followed by Chancellor Christian Kern's Social Democrats (SPO) at 27.1 percent and the far-right FPO at 25.9 percent.
