Australia: Melbourne’s Macedonians rally in protest to possible name change

Hundreds of Macedonian-Australians gathered in Melbourne on Sunday to rally for Macedonia's right to keep its name in an ongoing dispute with Greece. Flocks of people covered the streets of the Victorian city, waving Macedonian flags and chanting in support of the Balkan nation. «Macedonia is not Greece, in any shape of form, in any shape of form, in any dedication of what it is, is not... Еще Greece in any way,» claimed one protester. «Accept the reality, we are Macedonians, we are not going anywhere, we are not giving up our name,» another protester said. Rallies have been also organised in Sydney and Perth on Sunday. Many in Greece see the name 'Macedonia' as posing a threat to the Greek state arguing that it implies a territorial claim over the eponymous region of northern Greece. After the Balkans Wars of 1912−1913, the territory of historic-geographic Macedonia was divided amongst Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia. The naming dispute dates back to when Macedonia declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. As a result, international organisations and states that do not recognize the constitutional name «Republic of Macedonia» refer to it as «the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia» or FYROM for short.»
