Armenia: Parliament elects ex-president Sargsyan as PM

The Armenian Parliament elected the country’s ex-President Serzh Sargsyan as the new prime minister in Yerevan on Tuesday. The lawmakers backed the ruling Republican Party of Armenia’s (RPA) nominee with 77 votes to 17 with no abstentions. Addressing the floor after his victory, Sarsgyan stated that he is «sure that together we will be able to resist the actions of groups of screwed-up people... Еще and will be able to return to the path of constructive dialogue.» The ex-president’s appointment came as thousands of people took to the streets of the Armenian capital to oppose Sarsgyan and his party. Prior to parliament’s vote, leader of the opposition movement Armenia's Civil Contract, Nikol Pashinyan, reportedly announced a 'nonviolent Velvet revolution.'
