Argentina: Race is on to find missing sub, oxygen running out says Navy

During a press conference outside the Navy headquarters in Buenos Aires, the Navy's spokesperson Enrique Balbini confirmed yesterday's report that the noise picked up by US P-8 antisubmarine aircraft was not a «sub». The search continued for the missing Argentine submarine ARA San Juan, on Tuesday. Overnight, a P-8 aircraft spotted white flares, but the boats scanning the area were unable to... Еще locate its source. Balbi disclosed that the ARA San Juan only uses red and green flares. During the search, two boats encountered an empty life raft, but its markings and nomenclature did not match those of the Naval Submarine Service. Balbi said that if the submarine was unable to use its snorkel and reach the surface by its own means, it «would be on its sixth day of oxygen.» The ARA San Juan went missing on Wednesday, shortly after reporting an electrical malfunction. It was 480km (380 miles) off the coast, en route from Ushuaia to its base in Mar del Plata.
