Argentina: Pro-choice march in Buenos Aires as lawmakers present abortion bill

Hundreds of pro-choice activists protested outside the Congress building in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires on Tuesday, as 71 lawmakers from different political parties presented a bill to legalise abortion for the seventh time. Protesters wore green handkerchiefs symbolising the abortion rights movement. This time, the bill has more support than ever, and will open a debate in the... Еще Congress which will start next month. «Today we are here in front of the nation's congress to present the project of the national campaign for the right of abortion for the seventh time, to demand legalisation of abortion in Argentina, voluntary abortion,» explained activist Malena Lenta. The bill would allow women in Argentina to terminate a pregnancy during the first 14 weeks. «In Argentina there are about one million pregnancies per year, and approximately between 370,000 and 520,000 have an abortion. As it is a criminalised practice there are no official statistics in relation to this issue,» claimed Malena. «Clandestine abortion is the main cause of death in pregnant women. About 50 to 100 women die annually due to clandestine abortion,» she added. This subject has garnered more attention since President Mauricio Macri said he was in favour of a debate and would encourage the Congress to vote over it, even if he said to be anti-abortion. In Argentina, abortion is only allowed in cases of rape and risks to a woman's health.
