Argentina: Buenos Aires women react to Senate rejection of abortion bill

Residents of Buenos Aires reacted on Thursday to the Argentinian Senate's rejection of a bill that would have permitted abortion within the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. «I cannot believe that the Senate voted against the rights of women, it makes me very sad,» said Silvina Perez. Another passerby, Claudica Fernandez, said she supported the Senate's decision. «I agree with the two lives, I... Еще defended the two lives, I agree and yes we must continue working to find all the possible solutions to this situation, which is not so easy,» she said. Senators rejected the bill by a seven vote margin, 38:31, with two abstentions. The bill was not supported by President Mauricio Macri. Pro-choice supporters rallied in Argentina following the legislative success of like-minded protesters in other predominantly Catholic countries such as Ireland. In Latin America however, only three other states; Uruguay, Guyana and Cuba, permit early-term abortions. Under current laws, abortion in Argentina is permitted only in cases of rape, or if the mother's health is in danger.
