The 82-year-old president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who was rarely seen in public since suffering a stroke in 2013, announced his resignation on April 2, after the army chief called for him to be declared incapable of carrying out his duties. One week later, Algeria's parliament appointed Abdelkader Bensalah as the country's interim-president for the next 90 days. Bensalah has since announced a new presidential election, scheduled for July 4, to choose a successor to Bouteflika.
