At least two people died and dozens were evacuated from villages located in the forests of Gouraia in the coastal governorate of Tipaza on Saturday, as the massive fires that broke out on Thursday spread into populated areas.
Footage filmed on Saturday shows the scorched mountain slopes and damaged homes in Gouraia villages affected by fires.
“Yesterday, around one o'clock at night, the fire appeared there in the distance, and it began to approach and expand to reach here around three o'clock, then the fire raged and we saw it, and suddenly it reached here. What you can do at this late hour, it is God will,” Hamzeh, a resident of Gouraia said.
According to media reports, Algerian Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad visited the area on Saturday to check out the aftermath of the fires.
The Civil Protection Authority reported the continuation of the rescue operations in a statement published on social media on Saturday.
