Armed robbers gained access to an Austrian Airlines plane ready for takeoff in Rinas International Airport on Tuesday and took off with millions of euros in cash.
Posing as tax investigators, the robbers had reportedly gained access to the airport premises through a fire services entrance, threatened freight workers and hauled the cash being loaded in the cargo.
Police gave chase and a gunman... Еще was shot dead in the ensuing exchange of fire. Four more were reportedly arrested.
According to the Austrian Airlines, no passengers or crew members were hurt and the plane took off for Vienna after a three-hour delay.
This is the third time the airport has fallen victim to such a heist.
Albanian media believe the exact amount ranged between €2.5 million ($2.8 million) and €10 million ($11.3 million).
Foreign banks operating in the country send their hard currency to Vienna because Albania's central bank does not accept deposits for security reasons.
