Afghanistan: Pompeo meets Ghani to push forward peace talks

The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, arrived in Kabul this Monday to meet with President Ashraf Ghani to help quell the political instability stemming from last year's elections, which have held back peace negotiations with the Taliban. Since the elections held in September, Ghani's rival, Abdullah Abdullah, has contested the results, in spite of the country's elections commission declaring... Еще Ghani the winner last month. The political in-fighting has endangered peace negotiations with the Taliban, whom the US and NATO came to an agreement with, in February to begin withdrawing troops in exchange for the group continuing to ward off terrorist factions in the region. The surprise visit by Pompeo was made during a time of severely reduced travel as the world copes with the ever-worsening coronavirus pandemic.
