Afghanistan: Locals rail at alleged US airstrikes after deadly attack in Nangahar province

Locals in the Haska Mena district of Nangahar province were seen fleeing from the area on Saturday after an alleged US airstrike two days prior killed some 16 civilians. Governor of Haska Mena district Saaz Wali claimed that the victims were killed in an US attack targeting members of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL). Mohammad Omar, a tribal elder who reportedly witnessed the strike was critical of foreign involvement in the area. «Now it was proven for us that it is a project of foreigners. They don't want this war to end,» he said. «We can't accept the cruel attacks against our people anymore. We urge the government of Afghanistan to prevent such brutal acts,» Omar continued. The Haska Meyna district, as recently as July 23, suffered airstrikes, with residents stating that the action hit a funeral ceremony, killing eight civilians and injuring ten others, including women and children.
