Afghanistan: Food shortages caused by COVID-19 lockdown threaten vulnerable children

Soaring food prices caused by Afghanistan's coronavirus lockdown threatened large parts of the population struggling to feed themselves. Footage filmed in Islamabad on Saturday shows child workers, who scrape by for themselves and their families collecting recyclables from the streets. «We are coming to the city every day for work but the whole city is under lockdown due to the coronavirus. In... Еще a full day's work I can't earn enough for five pieces of bread. If the situation continues like this, we will die from hunger,» said Noor Haidar, a teenage street labourer. International NGO Save the Children has warned that close to 7 million children in Afghanistan will continue to face food shortages in May, something which has already plagued the war-torn country for many years. The country's health services may struggle to address the severe malnourishment stemming from the lockdown, as coronavirus has been spreading rapidly in the country.
