500KG WWII-era bomb forces evacuations and train closures in central Berlin

An unexploded bomb from the Second World War was found in the centre of Berlin on Friday, resulting in the temporary closure of the main train station and the evacuation of the local area. The 500 kg (1,102 lbs) bomb was found during construction on Heidestrasse in the Central (Mitte) neighbourhood of Berlin. One officer explained what will happen next to the bomb: «it [the bomb] will now be... Еще taken to our department, to the Grunewald blast site, and once there it will probably be destroyed through a controlled demolition in autumn, and then this story will end.» Residents living within nearly a kilometre of the bomb have been evacuated as disposal units extracted the bomb, while Berlin's Main train station (Hauptbahnhof) was closed for four hours.
